Police: New Haven woman spits in officers' facesPosted: Updated:
A 42-year-old woman was arrested by New Haven police Friday after she stole a purse from a bar and later spit in officers' faces.
According to police, a woman was at the Black Bear Saloon on Temple Street when she went outside to smoke a cigarette and left her purse at the bar around 3:11 p.m.
When she returned from her cigarette break, the woman noticed her purse was gone and alerted the bartender, who viewed surveillance video and spotted the burglary.
When the woman entered the bathroom, she recognized Sherrie Hannon of New Haven from the surveillance video. Hannon dropped the purse and fled out of the bar toward Church Street, police said.
She would later be arrested by police in the 800 block of Chapel Street and charged with sixth-degree larceny, assault on a police officer and first-degree criminal mischief.
While in the police cruiser, Hannon became upset and spit at the officers. She even kicked out and bent the door of the cruiser.
Officers eventually pepper sprayed Hannon in the face.
Hannon was also charged for previous offenses, which included issuing a bad check, breach of peace, trespassing, assault and violation of probation and failure to appear in court crimes.
