Glendale Pop Warner football raising money for championship in FLPosted: Updated:
A Glendale Pop Warner football team is heading to Florida for the national championship game series.
The Grand Snakes, a team of 23 teens, beat out a California team last weekend in the semi-finals, making their way into the national spotlight.
"This is the dream team, you don't get teams like this ever," said Coach Mike Johnson. "We've got speed, we've got size, and we've got it all. All of it."
The only thing the team needs now is money. After winning the division last weekend, these teens have a little less than a week to raise 20,000 to get all 23 players to Florida for the championship game.
When asked what is so special about his team, defensive right-tackle Jake Callaway told CBS 5, "Mainly, like, our bond because we're all very close like brothers."
The team is 12-0 and according to the coach, their fundraising efforts will help them make sure everyone goes to Florida.
"We've made sure that all the kids are going funds wise, so we aren't leaving any kids behind," said coach and parent Rick Sharp.
Jake Callaway says he and his friends are spreading the word via social media.
"This is the only way we can make it to Florida and I think we have a good shot at winning and so it would be greatly appreciated if people donated," he said.
The team had a car wash on Saturday, Nov. 24, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 10120 W. Bell Rd. at Mike's Sun City Union and Grimaldi's Pizzeria at 9788 W. Northern Ave. No. 1440 in Peoria donated 50 percent of all sales to the team from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
The team also has a fundraising web site where the general public can donate.
