Customers, emergency officials lose phone service in MontvillePosted: Updated:
Cities and towns throughout Connecticut are experiencing problems with cell phone service.
Cell towers run off local power, so until its restored many of the towers are relying on generators to operate.
Connecticut Light and Power Spokesman Bill Quinlan said crews are working on the problem and have equipped their employees to deal with this situation.
"It's been an issue with respect to telecommunications in the eastern portion of the state," he said at news conference Wednesday. "One way we're overcoming that is through the deployment of satellite phones and satellite technology."
In the Oakdale section of Montville, people were checking their phones constantly for bars Wednesday because service was spotty. Home phones were not working either for many residents.
"If there is an emergency we would have to run next door to use someone else's cell," said Beth Rogers of Montville.
Montville Mayor Ronald K. McDaniel said one AT&T tower failed Tuesday night and left the Oakdale Fire Department without phone service. By Wednesday, power to the tower was restored.
AT&T continued to work across the Northeast to get as many cell towers working as fast as possible.
"We are working around the clock, including conducting ongoing damage assessment, rapid deployment of generators and equipment, and movement of key personnel," AT&T said in statement Wednesday.
Many customers are bundling their phones with their cable and internet in a package. When the power goes, all three services go out. And that is scary for some Montville residents
"Especially you know at night, you never know when I might need to call 911 or something," said Rose Gordon.
