The Democrat who won the primary in Arizona's 6th Congressional District says he's ditching the party and will seek election as an independent.

Matt Jette's name will still appear on the ballot as a Democrat. But he says his decision to change his voter registration on Thursday was driven by unhappiness with both parties and he hopes Republicans will now feel comfortable voting for him.

Jette ran as a Republican against Gov. Jan Brewer in the 2010 primary. He beat out another Democrat in August for the right to take on Republican Rep. David Schweikert in the November general election.

The 6th district is strongly Republican.

Maricopa County Elections Department spokeswoman Yvonne Reed says she can't confirm Jette changed his registration because Thursday's filings have not yet been processed.

The 6th District includes Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and parts of Phoenix.
