Authorities in Peoria say three people received flash burn injuries when the boat they were on exploded at Lake Pleasant on Sunday morning.
Peoria Fire spokesman Tom Pendley said a man and two women were injured when the boat they were on exploded shortly before 10 a.m. Sunday.
An object from the boat impaled one of the women's arms, said MCSO Sgt. Wayne Lupinski. Two other people on board were not hurt.
The incident happened near the 10-lane boat ramp on the back side of the lake.
"Fortunately, this explosion occurred not far from the dock," Pendley said.
The three injured people were flown to the Maricopa County Burn Center in Phoenix for treatment for burns and smoke inhalation. They are all expected to survive their injuries.
Maricopa County sheriff's investigators on scene said it appears to be a fuel explosion. Pendley explained fuel vapors can collect in the engine compartment.
Heber Arechiga, who was at the lake, said he heard an explosion that sounded like gunfire.
"We heard screaming and saw pieces fly up in the air from the boat," Arechiga said. "Everybody is trying to have fun and enjoy the day with their family. It's a scary thing."
The incident is still under investigation.
