Phoenix PD: Wife arrested in shooting death of husbandPosted: Updated:
A $1 million cash bail has been set for a Phoenix woman accused in the shooting death of her husband on Tuesday night.
Phoenix police said 31-year-old Rebekah Mellon was arrested early Wednesday. She's being held on suspicion of first-degree murder and has an Aug. 10 preliminary court hearing.
Officer James Holmes with the Phoenix Police Department said they were called about 10 p.m. to a home near West Encando Boulevard and North Central Avenue where they found 46-year-old Donald Mellon Jr. inside with a single gunshot wound.
Mellon was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police tried to speak with Rebekah Mellon about what happened but she was uncooperative, Holmes said.
According to the police report, Rebekah Mellon was placed in the back of a patrol car where she fell asleep. When she woke up, she told police she came out of the bedroom and found her husband on the floor bleeding and called 911.
Detectives said their investigation found that Rebekah Mellon fired one shot from a handgun at her husband. The shots appear to be an unprovoked attack. Police said she did not call 911 for several minutes and did not render aid.
According to Holmes, Rebekah Mellon was booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail Wednesday afternoon for suspicion of first-degree murder.
Holmes said detectives have not yet determined a motive.
Police said there were prior incidents of domestic violence at their home but none resulted in arrests.
Police said the couple, who had been married for seven years, had an 11-year-old child who was not home at the time of the shooting and is now staying with family.
