New procedure helps excessive sweating

Posted: Updated:

They're something everyone is born with.

We're talking about sweat glands.

But not all of them are created equal.

Some people sweat more than others - and suffer from a condition known as hyperhidrosis.

It can lead to some embarrassing problems.

A new FDA approved treatment called MiraDry may provide some relief.

Here's how it works; a nurse maps out the patient's underarm and gives them 20 to 30 shots of numbing anesthetic.

Then the doctor starts to run a device over the underarm skin.

It sucks up sections of the skin, and then shoots them with microwaves.

That actually heats up the junction between the 2nd and 3rd layer of the skin and destroys the sweat glands

A company study shows patients who used MiraDry experienced an 82 percent reduction in sweat over 18 months.

The procedure can cost anywhere from 2 to 3 thousand dollars and insurance does not cover it.
