Firefighters continue to battle blaze outside of YoungPosted: Updated:
Firefighters continued to battle the Poco Fire about six miles northeast of Young as it spread to 11,011 acres, fire officials said Thursday morning.
Crews continued to hold and improve existing fire lines on the north, east and south sides of the fire, officials said. The fire remains 15 percent contained.
Fire crews on the southwest side of the fire on Forest Road 857 will extend and reinforce fire lines by continuing burn-out operations Thursday.
Burn-out operations Wednesday left a firefighter with burns to his neck, according to officials. He is receiving treatment for his injuries.
The twin 500 kV power lines owned by Arizona Public Service and Salt River Project have been secured and re-energized.
Officials said smoke from the fire is widespread along the Mogollon Rim and will be visible to area residents.
Forest Road 512 remains closed between FR 291 and FR 200. The portion of the ranger district east of FR 200, south of FR 291 and north of FR 512 is also closed.
There are currently 731 firefighters including 11 hot crews, 22 engines, four bulldozers, 18 water tenders and several helicopters assigned to the incident, fire officials said.
