Helicopter crashes in Phoenix neighborhood

A privately owned helicopter crashed into a Phoenix neighborhood just east of State Route 51 between Indian School Road and Highland Avenue on Wednesday morning.

News helicopter news showed the wreckage between two homes in the neighborhood. Damage could be seen on at least two homes.

Two men, ages 40 and 58, were reported in stable condition and being taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix.

A Phoenix Fire Department spokesman said power to the helicopter had to be shut off before emergency crews could get the men out of the cockpit.

A check of the helicopter's tail number showed it belongs to Canyon State Aero LLC out of Falcon Field in Mesa.

The helicopter was tentatively identified as a two-seat Sikorsky 300C with a cockpit capacity of 600 pounds.

The crash was initially reported shortly after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 1800 block of East Roma Avenue.

The FAA is also responding.

No other information was immediately available.
