A toddler died Friday night after being pulled from a canal in Guadalupe, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's deputies said 2-year-old Bisco Mesquita died just before 7 p.m. after he was pulled from the water by a family member in the canal near Baseline and Priest.

Deputies said that the family looked for the child for about 30 minutes then called deputies and it was about another 10 minutes later that he was found unresponsive and in the water.

A Tempe fire spokesperson said emergency crews performed CPR at the scene and then transported the child to a local hospital.

Sheriff's deputies say they do not know how the boy made it to where he was found.

"This shows just how quickly we can lose track of children and quickly they can get away from us and how we just always need to be aware of where our kids are and the surroundings and possible dangers that are by the house that you are at," said Jeff Sprong with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

Right now, officials say this investigation is on-going, but Sprong said it looks like a bad accident.
