Coconut water used to stay hydrated

As temperatures rise into the record breaking category again today, many Valley residents are trying to stay hydrated.

One valley doctor of naturopathic medicine said if you are perspiring a lot, water may not be enough to keep you hydrated because you need to replace electrolytes.

Dr. Suneil Jain from Rejuvena Health and Aesthetics said drinking Gatorade isn't the best choice, either.

"I'm not a big fan (of Gatorade) because of the artificial colors and dyes that they use in there. They'll use some vegetable oil, things that are unnecessary and can be inflammatory," said Jain.

Jain said a good option is coconut water. You can buy it in a box and it is rich in potassium, magnesium and sodium, which are three crucial minerals that can be deficient when you are perspiring.

Better yet, said Jain, drink the coconut water straight from the coconut.

"The taste is much, much better because it's fresh. It's got more of the active enzymes and the vitamins as the box stuff does so the fresh coconut is always best. It may not be always feasible to carry around a fresh coconut. You can always take the juice out of it and either bottle it up or drink it straight from the coconut when you get home," added Jain.
