Old mines in western Arizona are getting the shaft from the Bureau of Land Management. The BLM says in recent weeks, 18 abandoned open and dangerous mine shafts near Quartzsite were closed off or filled in.
Bat gates and small domes were installed over the shafts which close access to people but allow bats to come and go.
Abandoned mine shafts can be public hazards for tourists and visitors.
BLM says gold seekers will look past the dangers inside old mine shafts hoping to strike it rich.
