Logging for new ski trails and a chairlift is under way at Arizona Snowbowl north of Flagstaff.
Ski operators say plans call for logging about 14 percent of the remaining tree canopy within the boundaries of Snowbowl.
That amounts to about 1 percent of the spruce-fir forest on the San Francisco Peaks.
The Arizona Daily Sun reports the biggest area set for logging is north of Hart Prairie, on the flanks of Humphreys Peak, but Upper Volcano ski trail is also approved for logging by the U.S. Forest Service.
Snowbowl owner Eric Borowsky says contractors will log as much as they can this year.
