PHOENIX (AP) - J.D. Martinez lined a two-out RBI single to deep left field with the bases loaded in the ninth inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Miami Marlins 3-2 on Sunday to clinch the top wild card in the National League. The comeback victory over Miami ensured Arizona will host the NL wild-card game October 4th.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Drew Brees stood on the Saints sideline for the national anthem. His hand was firmly over his heart. Nearly a dozen teammates sat behind him on the bench in protest of recent remarks made by President Donald Trump. Brees called Trump's recent comments about NFL players "unbecoming of the office of the President of the United States." But he doesn't agree it's right to sit for the anthem. The Saints defeated the Carolina Panthers 34-13.
LOUDON, N.H. (AP) - NASCAR isn't the NFL. It appeared no drivers, crew or other team members protested during the national anthem Sunday prior to a race at New Hampshire Motorspeedway. Several team owners and executives had said they wouldn't want anyone in their organizations to protest. Richard Childress, who was Dale Earnhardt's longtime team owner, said of protesting: "It'll get you a ride on a Greyhound bus."
LOUDON, N.H. (AP) - Kyle Busch earned a berth in the second round of NASCAR's playoffs with a dominant victory Sunday at New Hampshire Motorspeedway. Busch slipped through smoke from a multi-car crash on the backstretch that knocked out Martin Truex Junior's run at a second straight win and won in the Number 18 Toyota for the third time this season.
