PHOENIX -- The Summer Olympics are less than two weeks away, and one Valley resident is eager to bring home the gold
James Johnson will head to London on Monday where he will serve as the Greco-Roman wrestling coach for team USA.
“I think it’s an honor and a blessing when you get chosen by your peers to coach on the largest stage in the world,” said Johnson.
In 2008, team USA brought back one gold medal and two bronze medals. If they’re going to improve their performance in 2012, Johnson said they’re going to have handle the pressure that comes along with being in the Olympics.
“At the Olympic stage anything can happen on any given day, and you just have to be more prepared mentally and physically,” Johnson stated.
While Johnson believes that Russia will be the toughest team in the field, he noted that he’s more focused on making sure his athletes are ready to compete.
“Personally, as a coach I think your biggest competition is what’s in your mind and heart the day you walk out on the mat,” Johnson added.
