Early July is a time in which the intersection of games and college football fans greatly anticipate, as EA Sports popular NCAA Football game series launches it's latest iteration.

NCAA Football 14 will drop this year on July 9th, and already, some of the team and player ratings have leaked out, courtesy of Tradition Sports Online.

A quick perusal of the list shows an interesting (disturbing?) development:

Team Overall Offense Defense
Arizona State 84 86 83
Arizona 86 86 88

Wait, what?

Putting aside the equal rankings on offense—with Arizona's loss of departed quarterback Matt Scott and the torn ACL by leading wide receiver Austin Hill against an ASU unit returning most of it's key pieces—one thing is immediately jarring: Defense.

The Wildcats are coming into the 2013 season as a markedly better unit than ASU? Really? Surely this is just another case of national outlets flip-flopping ASU and UofA?

In terms of the 124 FBS teams in the game, Arizona's defensive ranking from EA would put them in a tie for 22nd-best, while ASU would be a pedestrian 49th.

Le's take a look at some facts, and where the teams stacked up against the 124 FBS teams:

2012 Stat ASU Arizona
Returning Starters 8 11
Returning All-Americans 1 0
All-Pac-12 Players - Returning (Total) 2 (3) 0 (0)
All Pac-12 HM - Returning (Total) 3 (5) 2 (2)
Sacks 2nd 108th
Tackles for Loss 1st 84th
Passing Defense 3rd 117th
Passing Efficiency Defense 10th 84th
Rushing Defense 81st 105th
Scoring Defense 40th 102nd
Total Defense 27th 118th

OK, EA Sports, that makes total sense then.

In a related note, EA programmers may be getting a knock on the door from this guy...
