Hanzal scores 2, Coyotes top Blue Jackets 5-3
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Martin Hanzal had two goals and an assist and the Phoenix Coyotes won for the third time in four games with a 5-3 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night.
Hanzal scored the final two goals of the game, the first a rare Phoenix power-0play score to break a 3-3 tie with 11:42 to play. He added an empty-net goal with 1:04 remaining.
The Coyotes had gone 17 power plays without scoring before Hanzal ended the drought.
Radim Vrbata scored for Phoenix before leaving the game in the second period with a lower body injury. David Moss and Kyle Chipchura also scored for the Coyotes.
Jared Boll, Matt Calvert and Derek MacKenzie scored for Columbus, which has lost five of six.
Arizona State beats Colorado 63-62 in overtime
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Evan Gordon's buzzer-beating layup in overtime lifted Arizona State past Colorado 63-62 Saturday night.
Gordon's game-winner came after Spencer Dinwiddie's bucket with 8.3 seconds left had given the Buffaloes a 62-61 lead. Gordon finished with 14 points.
Jahii Carson's 18 points led the Sun Devils (19-7, 8-5 Pac-12), which won for the first time in four tries in Boulder and swept the season series against the Buffaloes.
Dinwiddie led Colorado (17-8, 7-6) with 24 points and Askia Booker added 17 to break out of a four-game shooting slump.
The game was tied at 52 at the end of regulation following a furious rally by Colorado from a 54-48 deficit with 1:19 left. The Buffs tied the game on Xavier Johnson's dunk with 2.5 seconds left and Carrick Felix missed a potential game-winner at the buzzer.
It was just the sixth loss in 48 home games under Colorado coach Tad Boyle.
N ARIZONA-NORTH DAKOTA
Northern Arizona beats North Dakota 74-72 in OT
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Blake Hamilton scored five of Northern Arizona's 11 points in overtime, leading the Lumberjacks to a 74-72 victory over North Dakota on Saturday afternoon.
DeWayne Russell, who scored 21 points, got the Lumberjacks (10-16, 7-9 Big Sky) into the extra session with a game-tying layup with 11 seconds left in regulation. In overtime, Hamilton made a jumper and three free throws, the last of which gave NAU the lead for good, 70-69.
Aaron Anderson scored 24 points and made three overtime 3-pointers for the Green and White (11-14, 8-8), the last of which made it 73-72 with 4 seconds left. NAU's Gabe Rogers, who scored 24 points, was fouled and made a free throw, and North Dakota couldn't get off another shot.
The game was Northern Arizona's first-ever trip to Grand Forks and only the second meeting between the programs. North Dakota won 81-79 in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Jan. 26.
Haas in position to defend
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Bill Haas will take a two-shot lead over three golfers into the final round of the Northern Trust Open. The defending champion is 12-under par after firing a 7-under 64 in round three.
Webb Simpson, Charl Schwartzel (SHAR'-uhl SHWORTS'-uhl) John Merrick are tied for second place with 18 holes to play at Riviera.
