AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- The Avondale City Council has approved a general plan amendment for future development around Phoenix International Raceway.
The city and PIR officials hope development will provide new employment and more commercial and retail uses that expand the economic impact of the raceway west of Phoenix.
PIR President Bryan Sperber tells The Arizona Republic NASCAR facilities in other markets and the
popularity and growth of the sport have created opportunities for development.
The council's decision allows the raceway to begin planning and designing more improvements to the existing facility. As part of a longer-term development plan, PIR will study the development of new uses on land now used for parking. The uses could include hotels, restaurants, retail or light industrial that would benefit from being near the track.
