MESA -- For violating the rules, as many as 20 Mesa High School football players will be on the sidelines Friday instead of suiting up against Phoenix Maryvale.

Mesa principal Jim Souder confirmed the suspensions in an e-mail, but refused to give specific numbers of players suspended or what rules the players violated.

Jackrabbits coach Kelley Moore declined to comment on the situation.

Souder wrote the players, "did not demonstrate the work ethic we expect to remain an active Mesa Jackrabbit football player."

The Jackrabbits are off next week before concluding the regular season against Chandler Hamilton on Nov. 6.
