FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- The Arizona Cardinals just wrapped up their second day of training camp, and on this day there was no shortage of intensity on the practice field.

“It’s the first day of pads in camp,” tight end Todd Heap stated. “It’s an exciting day, you finally get that opportunity to hit somebody and just get that feeling back.”

The excitement to put the pads back on was mutual throughout the Cardinals roster.

“First day of pads, everybody has that extra aggression from the offseason lifting," defensive tackle Darnell Dockett added. “It was productive, we practiced with a good tempo and that’s the way to get better.”

The first day of pads is also a golden opportunity for veterans to get in a cheap shot, or two.

“You know whenever you put the pads on it’s a different animal," said free safety Kerry Rhodes. “It’s a chance for us to run around out there and even make some contact and try to knock somebody out.  You know the first couple of days you try to get them and they try to get you a cheap one.”

And every year without fail, when there is hitting there is fighting. This year was no different as rookie wide receiver Tre Gray and free agent cornerback William Gay got into a brief scuffle on the practice field.  No one was injured in the scrap.

The Cardinals will have a walk through at 9 a.m. Friday morning followed by an afternoon practice at 3:15.

CARDS NOTES:

The Cardinals have signed guard Russ Hochstein. The 12-year veteran played with the Broncos last season. Hochstein will wear number 65.
