Tempe, Ariz. -- ASU football head coach Todd Graham announced Tuesday after practice that junior defensive tackle Mike Pennel has been suspended indefinitely for not meeting team standards.
"We are not lowering our standards. Period,” Graham stated. “It’s something we are never excited about. But at the end of the day we are going to do things one way, and that is the right way.”
The suspension comes after Pennel went on a Twitter rant Saturday following Arizona State’s 27-17 victory over the California Golden Bears, a team which the Sun Devils have not defeated on the road since 1997.
Pennel tweeted, “Wow glad we won but warming the bench is a new feeling for me.” Pennel continued on to tweet. “How you expect me to smile when you disrespected me on national television.” Pennel concluded with, “They will probably make me shut down my Twitter for not keeping my mouth closed… Nobody else to talk you.”
The indefinite suspension marks the second time this season the 6 feet 5 inches 355 pound junior college transfer from Scottsdale Community College has been suspended by Coach Graham.
The first came in the beginning of the year when Pennel missed the Illinois game for violating team rules.
Coming into Arizona State, Pennel was considered the 6th overall junior college defensive tackle in the country.
So far on the season, Pennel has appeared in three games and has recorded three tackles.
