TEMPE, Ariz. -- Navy Midshipmen fans made a statement about Saturday's Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl by painting the A on A Mountain Navy blue. Aerial video clearly showed their message -- "Go Navy."
The Mids will take on our Arizona State Sun Devils in San Francisco's AT&T Park Saturday afternoon. This is the first time the Mids and the Devils will meet on the gridiron.
Navy is 7-9-1 all-time in bowl games and 1-1-1 all-time against current Pac-12 schools in bowl games. The Mids have lost four of their last five bowl matchups.
ASU wrapped up its season with a big upset win over Arizona, ending 7-5. They've lost their last three bowl games, however. The Devils' last bowl win was in 2005 at the Insight Bowl.
The Sun Devils are the favorites to win, especially if they can force a few turnovers and handle the ball well offensively. Sophomore QB Taylor Kelly threw for 2,772 yards and 25 touchdowns this season.
If Navy, however, moves the ball on the ground and rushing and receiving leader Gee Gee Greene gets going, the Mids just might be able to pull out a win.
They will have junior defensive tackle Will Sutton to contend with. Sutton leads the Devils in tackle for loss and sacks and could put a serious dent in Navy's offense.
The Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl kicks off at 2:07 p.m. Arizona time (1:07 p.m. Pacific and 4:07 p.m. Eastern).
ASU's A is often a target when the Sun Devils are gearing up for big games. Hours before the Sun Devils faced off against Oregon, Ducks fans pulled off a similar stealth attack and painted the A green.
When the iconic A comes under attack, ASU students armed with paint and rollers are generally pretty quick to hustle up the mountain and repair the damage.
By 1:30 p.m., several hours after the desecration was discovered, the A was undergoing another -- Sun Devil-approved -- facelift.
