TEMPE, Ariz. -- After making a run to the ACHA Final Four, the Arizona State hockey team is primed to pick up where they left off as they pursue the first national championship in program history. With most of their top talent from last season returning, and being augmented by several talented newcomers, ASU is once again among the elite in college hockey.
The rest of the country seems to agree, as the Sun Devils came in at No. 2 in the first ACHA rankings of the year.
ASU came in behind only defending national champion Minot State, and ahead of Lindenwood, the team that eliminated the Sun Devils in last season's Final Four. Adrian and Ohio round out the rest of the top five, with Oklahoma, Illinois, Robert Morris (IL), Iowa State and Davenport comprising the rest of the top 10. The Arizona Wildcats, whom ASU has beaten 32 consecutive times, came in 19th.
The Sun Devils will open their season tonight at home when the host San Diego State. The action starts at Oceanside Ice Arena in Tempe, with the puck dropping at 7:30 p.m.. These two teams will square off again on Saturday at the same time.
Led by senior captain Colin Hokle and high-scoring wing Kale Dolinski, the Sun Devils figure to once again a fearsome offensive attack, while defenseman Jordan Young anchors a young and talented blueline. In net, Joe'Delia will get the start tonight, but will be pushed during the year by newcomer Robert Levin.
