CINCINNATI (AP) -- The Cincinnati Reds have selected pitcher Mike Leake with the No. 8 pick in baseball's amateur draft.
The right-hander for Arizona State won the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year award for the second straight year.
Leake is 16-1 with a 1.36 ERA this season. He has four pitches, including a fastball that reaches 94 mph and a hard, downward slider.
Reds senior director of amateur scouting Chris Buckley said Tuesday that Leake is a very polished pitcher with a good delivery and lots of poise.
The 21-year-old Leake is the first pitcher selected by the Reds in the first round since Homer Bailey in 2004.
