PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Ryan Howard hit a tiebreaking two-run homer, Jayson Werth and Cody Ransom also connected, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-5 for a season-high sixth win in a row last night. Mark Reynolds hit his 24th homer for Arizona, which now has the third-worst record in the majors.

SEATTLE (AP) — Lauren Jackson scored a season high 33 points to help the Seattle Storm rally from an 18-point halftime deficit to beat the Phoenix Mercury 91-85 last night. The Storm clinched the top seed in the Western Conference. Sue Bird added 16 and Tanisha Wright had 14 for Seattle, which won its 12th game in a row.

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals have signed linebacker O'Brien Schofield to a four-year contract. Terms of the deal for the fourth-round draft pick were not disclosed yesterday. To clear roster space, the Cardinals released tackle Devin Tyler. He'd been signed as a rookie free agent in April. Training camp will begin on Friday.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Phoenix Coyotes have signed free-agent center Bracken Kearns to a one-year, two-way contract. Terms of the deal weren't revealed yesterday. The 29-year-old had 15 goals, 36 assists and 99 penalty minutes in 80 games last season for the AHL's Rockford IceHogs. He's played 266 career AHL games.
