LUKE AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. -- Larry Fitzgerald took a ride with the birds, but it wasn’t on a football field.
The Arizona Cardinals wide receiver took a wild ride with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds as he flew in the cockpit of an F-16 fighter jet.
Fitzgerald’s appearance was part of the festivities leading up to Luke Air Force Base’s open house and air show, "Lightning in the Desert," being held this Saturday and Sunday in Glendale. He handled clover loops and barrel rolls, and said the experience was exhilarating.
"The only way I could describe it is it being a roller coaster on steroids," he said. "To be able to go up there … it really makes you appreciate what they’re able to do."
Fitzgerald said afterward that he was sweaty and out of breath, but he will remember his trip in the skies for a long time.
"Going up today was truly an honor," he said. "It’s something that I will cherish for the rest of my life."
