TEMPE, Ariz. -- Another week, another significant addition to the Arizona State hockey roster.
Just seven days after bolstering their blue line with the signing of Ed McGovern, the ACHA champion Sun Devils and head coach Greg Powers announced the addition of forward Jared Morris.
"Jared is a monster pick up for our program," said Powers. "He was instrumental in taking Dauphin deep in the RBC Cup this past season and is an incredibly high level talent."
Morris played with the Dauphin Kings of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League last season, scoring 18 goals in 27 games. In his prior two MJHL seasons, both with the Winnipeg Blues, Morris tallied 58 goals in 114 games and averaged better than a point per game.
Like McGovern, Morris, a Manitoba native, passed up on many scholarship opportunities at the NCAA level to come to ASU.
The 6-foot-1, 201-pound Morris becomes one of the team's biggest forwards, and will help to replenish the offense. The Sun Devils led the ACHA in scoring during their championship season, but lost their top four scorers.
"He's a big-time talent up front and gives us a pure goal scorer which we needed losing the guns that we graduated," Powers said. "He's a really big body up front that has a very unique ability to put the puck in the net in a variety of different ways. He has an incredible shot, but he also gets to the dirty areas as well as anyone I've seen in a very long time and is the type of goal scorer that somehow, the puck just finds him."
Beyond his obvious on-ice skill, Morris also fits in with the high character standards that Powers has implemented during his time as the Sun Devils' head coach.
"Finding kids like Jared who have tremendously high character, are great students, and can score at will is tough but we've done that with Jared," said Powers. "He is going to fit in perfect with our system and culture, and will be a big piece to us defending our championship with his goal scoring ability."
Morris is the sixth member of this 2014 signing class. He joins forward Mak Baden and Connor Mailey and defensemen McGovern, Connor Schmidt, and Gianni Mangone.
ASU opens up their season on Sept. 19 when they host Niagra
