PHOENIX (AP) — Nate Schierholtz hit a two-run triple off Aaron Heilman in the 11th inning as the San Francisco Giants inched closer to the National League West lead with a 2-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks yesterday. Madison Bumgarner matched zeros with Arizona starter Ian Kennedy for seven-plus innings and the Giants pulled it out in the 11th. The Diamondbacks are 22 games out of first place.

PHOENIX (AP) — Two children have been taken to a hospital after being struck by a bat and a ball at yesterday's game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Francisco Giants. A 13-year-old boy seated near Arizona's dugout just past the start of the protective netting was hit on the right side of the head in the fourth inning as San Francisco's Buster Posey lost his bat swinging. In the next at-bat, the Giants' Pablo Sandoval sent a foul ball into the upper deck, hitting a 2-year-old girl in the forehead. The children's conditions are unknown.

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals have cut three players and claimed three off waivers, including veteran cornerback Brandon McDonald. The Cardinals released cornerback Marshay Green, fullback Reagan Maui'a (mow-EE'-uh) and linebacker Pago Togafau (PONG'-go TONG'-uh-fow). They claimed McDonald off waivers from Cleveland, plus outside linebacker Cyril Obiozor (OH'-bee-ah-zur) and fullback Jerome Johnson.

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — By all accounts, Derek Anderson was not handed the starting quarterback job in Arizona. He took it, teammates and coaches say, with his attitude, strong arm and eagerness to work on the weaknesses that made him an NFL castoff. With Matt Leinart released by the team over the weekend, Anderson is the unchallenged leader of the Arizona offense, with an undrafted rookie, Max Hall, backing him up.

HOUSTON (AP) — His agent says Matt Leinart has agreed to a one-year deal with the Houston Texans. Arizona released Leinart on Saturday. Condon confirmed to The Associated Press yesterday that Leinart had reached a deal with the Texans. They were looking for insurance at backup quarterback after Dan Orlovsky threw two interceptions in Houston's game last week. Houston cut another quarterback over the weekend.
