Beer Buzz: Chimay Cinq Cents has a lot of spirit

10:37 AM CDT on Thursday, October 23, 2008

By TINA DANZE / Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News food@dallasnews.com

BEER: Chimay Cinq Cents, also known as Chimay Triple or Chimay Blanche

WHO LIKES IT: Mark Monfrey, Artisanal Beverage Co.

STYLE and ORIGIN: Tripel (a.k.a. Triple) from Belgium made just outside the town of Chimay. Tripel refers to strong pale ales made with triple the malt content of regular ales or beers. They are yeasty-malty beers with prominent hops flavor and a dry finish. "This is a classic example of a tripel – light in color and high in alcohol," says Mr. Monfrey. The larger bottle of this ale is labeled "Chimay Cinq Cents" which means five centuries; this special label commemorates the 500th anniversary of the town of Chimay.

THE PITCH: "This beer is fruity, complex and spicy; it's a little snappy with a lot of spirit. And it's made by Trappist monks," says Mr. Monfrey. "My wife never liked beer until I took her to Belgium. It was an easy conversion because the beers were so wonderful. This was one of the first beers she liked. Of course, she might have been influenced by the fact that I bought her engagement ring in Belgium, too."

GET SOME: $10.99 for a 750 ml bottle at Central Market, Whole Foods Market, Kegs & Barrels, Hall's Grocery, and select locations of major liquor stores.

Every other week, Beer Buzz will explore a different premium beer sold in the Dallas market.
