Each year, the Level I Trauma Center at John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital cares for between 2,500 and 3,000 life- and limb-threatening cases.
And when they are not saving lives, the trauma center team emphasizes safety and prevention, through educational outreach programs. In 1999, John C. Lincoln became a founding partner of The Red Means Stop Coalition, a grassroots organization devoted to reducing red-light running. To support this goal, John C. Lincoln representatives travel to numerous schools each year, spreading the message of motor vehicle safety and trauma care.
A new program called ENCARE Choices helps teens start out as safe drivers. In her visits to schools, trauma nurse Julie Cobos, RN gives students a “reality check” on driving topics. The presentation encourages high school students to make the right choices when driving—avoiding red-light running, drinking, drugs, risk-taking behavior, distractions and speeding.
“Basically, we give students a realistic play-by-play on what happens when you come into our hospital as a trauma patient,” Cobos says.
More John C. Lincoln Safety Classes
In addition to its Choices program, John C. Lincoln offers several motorist safety programs. John C. Lincoln nurses frequently visit high schools, grade schools, churches and community centers to promote safety awareness and injury prevention. Specific programs include:
Motorcycle safety: Every eight weeks at a local motorcycle school, a trauma nurse leads a slide-show presentation that covers motorcycle safety, proper equipment and Arizona motorcycle laws.
Car-seat safety: John C. Lincoln’s Trauma Center and Head Start have joined forces to financially assist parents with the purchase of car seats for their children. Further, a certified bilingual instructor explains proper installation of car seats, as well as how to properly place a child in a car seat.
Seat belts in schools: In this program, called the "Battle of the Belt," high schools from throughout the state compete in a year-long campaign to improve seat belt usage in their schools.
