PHOENIX -- Phoenix police are asking for the public's help in finding a man suspected of robbing a Valley J.C. Penney.

According to authorities, a black male in his 40s walked into the J.C. Penney at 1700 West Bethany Home Road on Feb. 27 and approached the jewelry counter.

A female employee attended to the man, who asked if he could look at a ring inside the glass counter.

As the employee opened the counter, the man reportedly pulled out a semi automatic handgun and jumped over the counter.

The employee was able to flee to a safe location, while the suspect stole approximately $13,000 worth of jewelry.

The man fled the store and was seen getting into a 1996 or 1997 Chevy Suburban with a silver roof rack. The vehicle was being driven by an unknown man.

Detectives with the Violent Crimes Bureau Robbery Unit have obtained surveillance video from the store, while a forensic artist was able to produce a composite sketch of the suspect.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Phoenix Police Department's Violent Crimes Bureau Robbery Unit at 602-262-6141 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
