PHOENIX -- Former Phoenix Suns star Dan Majerle has confirmed to 3TV that he has accepted the position as head basketball coach at Grand Canyon University.
A press conference to formally announce the hire is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday.
Prior to Majerle accepting the position, GCU announced on Friday that Russ Pennell was resigning as their head coach.
“I am proud of the way that Coach Pennell has represented Grand Canyon University,” said GCU's president, Brian Mueller. “In light of our upcoming move to NCAA Division I status, we have come to a mutual decision that it would be in the best interest of the university and coach Pennell if we took different paths at this time.”
Pennell said he’s excited for the future and thankful for the time he had at GCU.
“I leave with great respect for Grand Canyon University and thank Brian Mueller for giving me the opportunity to lead the men’s basketball program over the past four seasons,” said Pennell.
Dan Majerle began the 2012-13 basketball season as an assistant coach with the Phoenix Suns.
In January, the Suns fired head coach Alvin Gentry, leaving Majerle and fellow assistant Elston Turner as the presumed front-runners to take over the position.
The Suns decided to name Director of Player Development Lindsey Hunter head coach, prompting Majerle and Turner to eventually part ways with the organization.
