PHOENIX -- A Valley puppy with a rare birth defect is garnering support from all across the globe.

Monkey is an American pit bull mix who was born without the top of her head just a few days ago.

When Monkey’s owners saw her condition they took her to the Arizona Small Dog Rescue, which is where she was taken in by Stacey Damaio.

“She’s strong, she has a very strong will,” said Damaio. “I think she’s doing very well."

Being that she’s still very young, doctors at the Bethany Animal Hospital are waiting until Monkey gets a little bit stronger before they operate on her head.

“Fortunately there’s skull under there protecting the brain, so this is really just a very superficial lesion,” said Dr. Katie Andre. “It’s just a lot for a little puppy that really should be putting all her energy into growing and not into healing at this stage.”

Monkey already has her own Facebook page, and has already received donations from as far away as Florida, Virginia, and even the United Kingdom.

If you’d like to help Monkey, you can donate to the Arizona Small Dog Rescue, or visit her Facebook page.
