MESA, Ariz. -- Newly released video is shedding some more light on the shoplifting allegations facing Justice of the Peace Mark Chiles.

Chiles was reportedly spotted on surveillance video early on March 28 taking a $40 speaker out of its box at a Mesa Walmart and then putting the empty box back on the shelf.

Chiles allegedly paid for several other items that day, but not the speaker.

Mesa police have since released video of their encounter with Chiles at his office.

“When the item was removed out of the box, the video has you putting the empty box back on the shelf,” said one of the officers. “We have recovered the box.”

Chiles, who initially appeared confused by the allegations, told police he thought he had purchased the speaker.

“I don’t even know what it’s for. Really, I thought I bought it,” remarked Chiles.

Chiles went on to tell police that he makes plenty of money and has no reason to steal.

“If you look at Walmart, I’ve spent thousands of dollars there,” said Chiles. “I just bought rifles. Spent a thousand dollars then went and spent another 400.”

Police, however, weren’t willing to cut Chiles any slack and issued him a citation for shoplifting.

While it’s just a misdemeanor offense, Chiles could also be reprimanded by the Arizona Commission of Judicial Conduct.

Chiles has a court date on May 13.
