MESA -- Mesa police arrested a suspect in the hit-and-run of a 10-year-old boy on Friday.

Police said Donovan Gonzalez was walking with his older sister when he was hit by a vehicle on Brown Road, just east of Recker Road. The vehicle did not stop at the scene.

Donovan suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to a hospital. He remains hospitalized in serious condition.

Following an anonymous tip, detectives responded to a Subway restaurant in east Mesa Tuesday afternoon where they found an older-model white Plymouth van with damage to the right side mirror and bodywork.

Mesa police spokesman Detective Steve Berry said the suspect, Anthony Luis Lopez, 24, was contacted inside the business and was taken into custody.

When questioned about the incident, Lopez reportedly admitted his involvement in the crime. Berry said it is not clear why Lopez didn't stop.

Drugs and alcohol are not suspected in the crime.

Lopez was booked for one count of leaving the scene of a serious injury accident.
