PHOENIX -- A man was arrested in a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian Friday night, according to police.

Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Steve Martos said 66-year-old Vernon Traylor was believed to be under the influence of alcohol.

Just before 9 p.m., Traylor was reportedly driving a Ford Mustang south on 32nd Street near McDowell Road when he struck a pedestrian crossing midblock.

The pedestrian, 53-year-old Ruben Jimenez Solis, was transported to a local trauma center but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival, Martos said.

"The whole family is feeling a lot of pain," said Lydia Retan, Solis' daughter-in-law. "Everybody loved him. He was a good person. He always liked playing with his grandchildren, and was very affectionate and friendly with everyone."

Solis leaves behind his wife of 35 years, five children and 10 grandchildren.

His wife, Isabel Adame, said her whole family has been supportive, but she feels like she is living a nightmare.

"I just couldn't believe it. It still feels unreal," she said.

Witnesses told police Traylor initially stopped at the scene but then fled south upon the arrival of officers. Police caught up to the Ford Mustang and initiated a traffic stop.

"I'm not upset with the driver," Adame said. "I know when some people drink, they're just out of it. I don't wish him any harm. I'm just going to work hard to move forward."

Traylor was booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of a fatal crash.

"Don't drink and drive, and don't cross the street after drinking either," Adame said. "Think of your families so something like this doesn't happen to your family. It's a pain I wouldn't wish on anybody."
