PHOENIX -- A man accused of beating and raping a woman just days after being released from a federal prison apparently committed suicide in jail over the weekend, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

Lane Halona, 23, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Lower Buckeye Jail Saturday afternoon.

Detention officers began CPR as the Phoenix Fire Department was en route. Halona was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

MCSO officials said the incident is being investigated as a suicide.

Tempe police said Halona attacked a woman as she was walking home from work near Mill Avenue on March 17.

Officers said they found him sleeping near where the assault took place. He was arrested and charged with two counts of sexual assault, aggravated assault and kidnapping.

Halona had been released from prison three days before the attack in Tempe. He served a 23-month sentence for aggravated assault and DUI.
