SCOTTSDALE -- A Scottsdale homeowner is lucky to be alive after a confrontation with an intruder ended in a stabbing.

It happened at a home in the neighborhood of Hayden Road between Mountain View Road and Via de Ventura.

According to Sgt. Mark Clark of the Scottsdale Police Department, the man, his wife and their 15-year-old son were awakened when a man entered their home through an unlocked back door at about 3:45 a.m. Thursday.

The homeowner, who is in his 50s, confronted the suspect, now identified as Michael Garland. Police say Garland pulled a knife and stabbed the man several times.

Despite his wounds, the man managed to hold on to the would-be burglar until police arrived on the scene and took him into custody.

Investigators do not believe there is any connection between Garland , 62, and the family. It's not clear at this point if Garland targeted the home or if it was a random break-in.

Police said the homeowner's wounds are not life-threatening. He is expected to recover. While understandably shaken, neither the man's wife nor his son was injured.

According to investigators, Garland has a criminal history. At this point, however, they have not said anything else about him.
