CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Chandler police say an officer resigned after being arrested on drug charges earlier this month.
Chandler police received information on Feb. 27 that Jeffrey Morgan, a 12-year officer assigned to the department's traffic unit, was smoking heroin.
Police conducted a criminal investigation, which included serving a search warrant on Morgan's home.
Morgan was arrested March 4 on suspicion of possession of a narcotic drug and drug paraphernalia.
He resigned from the department on March 7 in lieu of his termination, according to police.
Police said Morgan is out of jail and his case will now be handled by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
Chandler Police Det. Seth Tyler acknowledged that cases involving officers raise trust issues between the department and the public.
"When that trust is broken, then it is incumbent upon the police to take swift action, and that is what our department did. We took immediate action in this case," he said.
