PHOENIX -- A volunteer high-school baseball coach is recovering after being attacked on campus in what investigators are calling an ambush. Police believe that attack was allegedly planned, at least in part, by the man's ex-wife and her current boyfriend.

It happened on Friday at Desert Vista High School, which is located on 32nd Street north of Pecos Road.

According to police, the victim was leaving practice when he discovered his car had a flat tire. He was attacked and beaten as he bent down to change that flat.

According to Phoenix police, Valerie Hayes, the victim's ex-wife, planned the attack with Edward Meyer.

Investigators believe Meyer allegedly borrowed a friend's car and then ambushed the victim in the Desert Vista parking lot.

Police arrested Meyer, a US Airways pilot, a few hours after the incident as he tried to board a plane back to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he reportedly lives with his family.

Both Hayes and Meyer have been charged in connection with the assault. According to information from the court, the two were released on their own recognizance because the magistrate did not have probable cause to hold them.

The victim was badly beaten, but he is expected to recover.
