PHOENIX -- The Arizona Department of Public Safety and Arizona Department of Transportation are asking for help finding a hit-and-run driver who struck the Jefferson Street overpass on Interstate 17 Thursday morning.
Just before 11 a.m., an oversized commercial truck carrying what is believed to be a crane was traveling southbound when it hit the overpass.
The truck stopped briefly but soon fled the scene and has not been located.
The truck caused damage to several of the concrete girders on the southbound side of the bridge. DPS officials said debris was scattered across the road.
The cost to repair the bridge is not yet known.
Arizona Department of Transportation engineers evaluated the integrity of the bridge and confirmed that the bridge remains safe for traffic on both I-17 and Jefferson Street.
As a precaution, the left lane on the one-way eastbound Jefferson Street bridge will remain closed until repairs can be made. The left lane along the southbound I-17 exit ramp at Jefferson Street also is closed.
DPS is looking for any witnesses to the crash. Anyone who may have seen the truck or the driver is asked to call 602-223-2000.
