PHOENIX -- The northbound lanes of Interstate 17 near Cordes Junction have been reopened after a wrong-way crash on Friday evening.
Officers said a woman behind the wheel of a Toyota Prius was driving the wrong way on the interstate. Alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
"Paramedics after extricating her from her vehicle had her in the ambulance and had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on her breath and in the course of that it was also reported that she had admitted to having consumed alcohol," said officer Brett Thomas with the Arizona Department of Public Safety
The accident happened around 6:30 p.m. Friday. DPS said four vehicles were involved.
Three medical helicopters were sent to the scene. The injuries are reportedly serious and the patients were taken to area hospitals.
Traffic was being taken off at exit 262. Travelers returned to northbound I-17 by turning right on Cordes Lake Road, left on Stagecoach Trail and left on Arcosanti Road. The detour is about one mile.
The interstate reopened just before midnight.
