GILBERT, Ariz. -- A 2-year-old child died Sunday after being attacked by a group of dogs that were involved in a fight.
According to Gilbert police, the child was with a babysitter at a home near Val Vista and Germann when three pit bulls got into a fight with one another.
The babysitter called 911 when the dogs began to attack her and the child, but by the time emergency crews arrived the child had been mauled and was not breathing.
First responders performed CPR on the child and rushed him to Mercy Gilbert Medical Center. He was pronounced dead when he arrived at the hospital.
The babysitter, 28, also suffered multiple bites to her hands, legs and arms, and was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
She underwent surgery Sunday afternoon.
At the time of the attack, the babysitter was also watching the child's four siblings, who are between the ages of 6 and 9. None of the other children was harmed.
The mother of the 2-year-old was in Flagstaff at the time, while the father was in Mesa.
The family has been using the babysitter for years, according to police.
Police were waiting for a search warrant Sunday evening to enter the home.
"Right now we're looking at it as just a tragic terrible accident," said Sgt. Jesse Sanger with the Gilbert Police Dept. "But if the investigators get in there and find something once detectives are done there's always a possibility charges could be filed in this case."
The dogs are being held by Animal Control while police wait for a search warrant to investigate the home.
