MESA, Ariz. -- A cab driver was killed when his taxi crashed into a light pole during the morning rush hour Monday.

It happened shortly after 7:30 a.m. on Power Road south of Southern Avenue.

According to Mesa investigators, the driver of the Discount Cab suffered a medical condition, possibly a heart attack, that caused him to lose control of the vehicle and crash into the pole.

The cab driver, a 54-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger reportedly was evaluated by paramedics and released. That person was not injured and left the scene relatively quickly.

Aerial video from the Fort McDowell Casino News Chopper showed the green Discount Cab van nudged up against a pole in the median of Power Road, its front end severely damaged.

It's not clear if the driver was killed by the impact or if his medical condition is to blame.

Details will be updated as they come into the newsroom.
