SELIGMAN -- Icy roads are to blame for multiple collisions that shut down a section of Interstate 40 Tuesday night.

Eastbound I-40 is closed at milepost 113, about eight miles west of Saligman. The Arizona Department of Public Safety says 8-10 accidents are blocking the eastbound lanes, stretching from mile post 113 to mile post 136 near Ash Fork.

Several motorists are also stranded after sliding off the road or becoming otherwise disabled.

There was at least a one-mile backup at the time officials closed the interstate.

Officials say an alternate route has not yet been established.
