TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State University’s beloved mascot Sparky has undergone a makeover.
On Friday, the school revealed a newly designed Sparky that will make its first appearance during the spring football game in April.
Apparel and merchandise featuring the new Sparky is already available at a limited number of stores, including Sparky’s Stadium Shop and the Sun Devil Campus Stores.
ASU teamed with The Walt Disney Company to create the new look for Sparky through their InnovationSpace program.
The new Sparky will be used to appeal to younger fans across a variety of platforms, including comic books, children’s books, and animated productions.
ASU said their collaboration with Disney has also been a great partnership for students in the School of Design, as they’ve had a chance to learn from and work with some of Disney’s best illustrators, artists, designers and business executives.
Students will also get the opportunity to design future style guides for ASU-licensed apparel and merchandise that utilizes Sparky.
Stephen Teglas, vice president of licensing at Disney Consumer Products and an ASU alum, said working with ASU’s InnovationSpace program has been a great partnership.
“Our involvement with InnovationSpace has been very productive,” said Teglas. “We are very impressed with the caliber of the students, the faculty and the body of work we’re seeing.”
