GILA BEND, Ariz. -- Maricopa County sheriff's deputies recovered two stolen vehicles that were loaded with roughly 2,000 pounds of marijuana early Friday morning.
A mid-size SUV stuffed from the floorboards to the roof and an overloaded extended cab pickup truck were found in the desert east of Gila Bend following a pursuit that involved an MCSO helicopter, according to sheriff's officials.
The drivers and occupants abandoned the vehicles and drugs. They have not been located.
The marijuana had a street value of more than $1 million.
"Illegal drug seizures like this one continue to highlight a wide open border for smugglers of all kinds into Arizona," Sheriff Joe Arpaio said. "These suspects will be tracked down and charged for their crimes while new procedures will be put in place to contain future fleeing suspects."
