QUEEN CREEK -- Two young girls were hit by a car in Queen Creek Wednesday morning.

It happened at San Tan Boulevard and Grapefruit Street, which is near Sossaman Road.

According to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, the 5- and 6-year-old girls, who are students at Patterson Elementary School, crossed the street in front of the vehicle. There is no crosswalk in that area, which is very close to the girls' home. The driver skidded to a stop after hitting them.

Both girls, who were with an older sister when they were hit, were flown to Maricopa Medical Center as a precaution. While the girls were scraped up and bruised, they were coherent. Detective Aaron Douglas of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said their injuries were not life threatening. They are expected to recover just fine.

Douglas said there was no indication of impairment on the part of the driver who hit the girls. At this point, no citations have been issued.

The wreck is under investigation.
