QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. -- Authorities say a 1-year-old girl is in stable condition after nearly drowning in a swimming pool Friday evening.

It was reported on the 18400 block of East Ashridge Drive, near Queen Creek and Power roads.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said a 13-year-old girl was watching her 1-year-old sister and four other siblings at the home.

The teen noticed the baby was missing and went searching for her. She found her younger sister face down in the pool and pulled her out. Authorities said the child was not breathing.

The children's mother rushed home and reportedly arrived about one minute later. She began CPR until paramedics arrived.

Paramedics were able to get a pulse on the child and transported her to Mercy Gilbert Medical Center.

"It was one of those unfortunate accidents," sheriff's office spokesman Chris Hegstrom said. "There are things that we can do to prevent things like this from happening in the future. This yard didn't have a fence around the pool."

The sheriff's office said no charges are being filed against the mother or teen.

In the state of Arizona, it is acceptable for a 13-year-old to supervise younger children, deputies said.

The father did not want to speak on-camera but told 3TV on Saturday that the child is recovering and will spend another three days in the hospital for observation.
