With the change of the seasons, comes a change in fashion styles, so I wanted to know what's in to wear and how to wear it well to flatter my 40-something figure.  So I interviewed my favorite fashion expert, Heather Cisek, owner of The Purple Skirt Boutique in Ahwatukee and of the Dominique R boutique in Scottsdale, and she gave me some great ideas for all of us gals who want to dress stylish, without looking too young.  I love her ideas, so read on to see what fabulous fashions flatter the figure this season.

Dresses that Do the Trick!

A multi-tasking dress made by Vierick is so flattering because it is a form fitting style that shapes the body  to give a sexy silhouette, but it also includes a built-in poncho-like shawl that covers the middle in a beautiful way.  To see what I mean, watch the segment.  Every time I wear this dress, I get compliments all day long!  I just love how it looks and feels and the eggplant color is back in this season.  I purchased mine at The Purple Skirt for $139.

Another great dress designer is Desigual because the styles are fun and unique and the fit is flattering.  This line is made with material that stretches comfortably as you go about your day and evening.  Plus the lorax material shows off a fantastic metallic look, but the fabric is not itchy, but instead, soft and comfortable.  This is another dress that gets noticed every time I wear it.  To see this dress, be sure to watch the segment.  The Desigual dress goes for $144 at The Purple Skirt.

Both of the dresses flatter the figure because the first one covers the tummy area, while showing off a feminine shape underneath, while the Desigual not only stretches as you move, but it is also adorned with a pattern that camouflages the hips and tummy.  Plus the bright and pretty V neck design draws the eyes up to the neck, giving a long and slimming look.
I have also found slimming dresses at JC Penney and in J Lo's line that is sold at Kohl's.  And sign up on Kohl's email list to get money-saving coupons on those fun J Lo styles and more.

An Updated Track Suit that is Super Stylish

I love that I get to wear track suits in the winter.  So comfy and the right one looks nice, too.  Heather tells me that the palazzo style of pants, made by Saint Grace Carol, paired with a crop top is the new track suit for this season.  The pants have a bell bottom leg that is slimming and gives the legs a longer appearance.  The crop top is a high-low piece and is eye-catching, because the top is short in the front, but lays longer in the back, which is slimming and stylish, all in one.  And if women want the pants to be shorter, Heather says that they can be cut with a pair of scissors!  Fun, fashionable and cozy to wear!

Top Pieces To Top It Off

The peek-a-boo shoulder top is in this season.  This is flattering since a little skin is shown, while everything else is covered, making the peek-a-boo name so appropriate and fun.  For this type of blouse, Heather showed me the Akiko top that has vertical lines and a red trim side-lined bodice.  Plus the V-neck and peek-a-boo shoulders all result in a slimming and sophisticated look.

And say goodbye to itchy sweaters because the new Desigual design is fun with bold colors and a soft and comfortable material.  The flattering top can be pulled down to expose the shoulders or worn over the shoulders as a cowl neck, if desired.  Sweaters like this one can be paired with leggings and flats or a long skirt with boots, making it a very versatile piece.

Blazers are back this season and Tart makes a nice one that is dressy, but made of a soft fabric for a more relaxed feel.  Pair this blazer with a tank underneath, a nice long necklace (see my section below on accessories) and Maker's denim jeans.  These jeans have a nice high waist that cover the muffin top, while also fitting a gal's form just right.  This particular jean has a slimming pant line and they sell for around $100 at Heather's two shops.

And Underneath It All...

Knowing which undergarments and tank tops to put underneath the different styles can make all the difference in the finished look and in your own comfort.  For example, a low cut top may need a tank top, but what type of tank is needed?  The Purple Skirt and Dominique R offer several types of tanks that all serve a different purpose.  A pretty lace cami, sold at the two stores,  provides an attractive lace underlay that complements a low-cut blouse or dress.  Plus the lace camis sold at Heather's stores are adorned with tummy-tucking material in the front that help to flatten the tummy with a comfortable stretchy material that feels good underneath.  Or you may want a tube top, but if you're worried about it not staying up, the Nikibiki line offers one with a very thin strap.  And yet another Nikibiki tube top sold at Heather's stores also offer tummy control because more material is included that cover the stomach, not just the bust.

For a control-top panty that is super sheer, try the Commando High Rise Thong or the Commando Control thong panty.  To see these undergarments, be sure to watch the segment.  The right undies can make all the difference when it comes to wearing a flattering outfit.

Accessorize to Glamorize...Comfortably, Too

I'm always amazed by just how much more I like an outfit once an accessory is added to the complete the ensemble.  This season brings tribal precious gem stones that double as a bracelet or a necklace, so you get more bang for your buck.  Plus the Lucky Star line is made by a local jewelry designer, so it is nice to support our local female entrepreneurs.

Longer necklaces are all the rage and the longer length is slimming because the piece elongates the entire outfit.

If you are looking for a belt that won't bulk, try the Invisibelt Skinny.  This belt will pull your pants in to slim, plus it will lay flat under a fitted top!  I love this invention that is also sold in Heather's stores.

Last but not least, I found an amazing pair of nude high heels that are fitted with built-in orthotics that won't kill your feet and actually look great too!  The Ziera Jackson Bisque heel comes in a pretty nude shade that goes with everything.  Plus, Ziera shoes are designed with a functional footbed that cradles your foot.  Stylish features like adjustable straps, flexible fabrics and lacing systems provide for a personalized fit.  And each pair of shoes have two sets of inlays for support and walking-on-air comfort.  These are high heels that I can finally wear and not be in the pain that night or the next day!

When I wear the Ziera heels (I have them in black, too) I get compliments every time.  But, at around $200 a pair, these babies are costly!  And I have never ever spent that much on a pair of shoes before in my life, however these are now my go-to high heels, replacing the numerous cheap pairs that cost me a lot less money, but a lot more pain.  That is how I justify the price of these sole-saving shoes. I bought mine at my local Ahwatukee Foot Solutions store and I also found them online at strideshoes.com.

The Purple Skirt is my favorite #1 local boutique.  To see the many styles that fill the walls at the Purple Skirt, check out the website at www.shopthepurpleskirt.com.  I have also found some slimming fashions at JC Penney and J Lo's line at Kohl's.  When friends ask me where I shop The Purple Skirt, Kohl's and JC Penney is my answer.
